The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative office in Montenegro is seeking to hire a highly qualified Economist, preferably starting Fall, 2026.
The position is offered as a one-year local contractual appointment, with the possibility of renewal for successive terms of up to three years, subject to continued need and satisfactory performance.
Candidates must be nationals or residents of Montenegro or be able to independently obtain a valid work permit before starting employment with the Fund to be considered. Proof of nationality, residency, and/or work authorization will be required prior to starting employment. The IMF will not sponsor or assist with obtaining work permits.
Job Summary
The Economist supports the Regional Resident Representative for the Western Balkans and Montenegro mission team as needed, including through (a) performing analytical work, e.g., undertaking economic analysis, evaluating, monitoring, and assessing economic developments and policies, (b) liaising with the Montenegrin authorities, (c) supporting office management activities.
The Economist responds creatively to address new economic issues and contexts; work with other international financial institutions, bilateral and multilateral donors and other stakeholders and develop and maintain databases on aspects of the economy of Montenegro. The Economist works independently under the general supervision of the Regional Resident Representative for the Western Balkans, based in Vienna, and the Montenegro mission chief, based in Washington, DC.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Regional Resident Representative for the Western Balkans and the Montenegro mission chief, the Economist undertakes the following duties and responsibilities:
Qualifications
MA in macroeconomics, financial economics, or relevant fields, e.g., international economics, monetary economics, public finance, econometrics, labor economics, political economy, or international trade and finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Five or more years of relevant work experience (e.g., econometrics, statistics, finance) or equivalent experience.
Strong macro expertise, analytical and quantitative skills, and interest in policy-related research. Strong understanding of the economy in Montenegro.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively work in multi-sectoral and multi-cultural teams, as well as the ability to work independently and to take initiative. Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with private and public sector stakeholders.
Proficiency in software applications is required, e.g., Excel, Power Point, and econometrics packages, together with a knowledge of statistical and econometrics techniques and macroeconomic relationships.
Language Requirements
Fluency in oral and written Montenegrin and English required.

- Monitoring, assessing, and reporting on economic and related policies and political developments in Montenegro.
- Conducting policy-oriented research and analysis on macroeconomic, financial sector, and structural reform areas in Montenegro.
- Collecting/analyzing data and preparing a variety of written and statistical outputs.
- Supporting and contributing to the work of the headquarter (HQ) based Montenegro country team and the Regional Office for the Western Balkans in Vienna.
- Developing and maintaining effective relationships with central bank and government officials, representatives of the private sector, international organizations, and other stakeholders in Montenegro.
- Supporting country team and technical assistance missions in Montenegro.
- As part of a small office, the candidate is also expected to be responsible for a range of administrative tasks, including managing the office and its budget.
