Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Language and Culture Coordinator (LCC), the Language and Culture Facilitator (LCF) develops and delivers Montenegrin language and culture sessions for American Peace Corps trainees, following established Peace Corps curricula and methodologies. As a member of the Pre-Service Training (PST) intercultural team, the LCF acts as a cultural bridge between trainees, their host families and training communities, and contributes to the observation and assessment of trainees’ language, culture, and behavioral competencies.
Mandatory Requirements
Final year students or completed university degree in English language, Montenegrin Language, Pedagogy/Teaching, or other relevant disciplines.
- Previous experience in teaching, language instruction, or educational facilitation is required.
- Oral and written fluency in both Montenegrin and English is required.
- Participate in staff training program (Training of Trainers) before PST begins, and design lesson plans and language and culture training materials in the Peace Corps format, in coordination with the LCC.
- Conduct language classes in Montenegrin for small groups of trainees, adapting lessons to their learning needs.
- Deliver cultural sessions in the training community in accordance with the culture curriculum.
- Act as a cultural model and information resource for trainees, supporting their integration into the community and their relationship with host families.
- Provide individual language support outside classroom hours, and accompany trainees on excursions, field troops, and intercultural activities.
- Observe trainees during language and culture sessions and record observations against the defined language, culture, and behavioral competencies.
- Provide regular feedback to trainees on their progress and contribute to structured trainee assessment and recommendations on language status to the LCC.
- Act as an interpreter and translator when needed.
- Support the organization of PST events, including Arrival Day, Orientation Week, Hub Days, Counterpart Conference, Swearing-In Ceremony.
- Meet regularly with the LCC and other training staff to plan upcoming sessions and develop new materials.
- At the end of PST, evaluate the language and culture program, submit all lesson plans and materials, and assist with closing the training community.
- Desirable Requirements
- Experience in the intercultural or cross-cultural facilitation
- Experience teaching or training adult learners
- Teaching qualifications, certificates, or experience beyond the minimum requirements.
- Experience working in a team with people from different cultural backgrounds.
- Familiarity with standard office software for preparing lesson plans and training materials.
Candidate will need to pass a background/security clearance.
Working Conditions
Full-time position: 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, for the duration of the contract period.
Language and culture sessions, individual tutoring, special events, and field trips that fall outside the standard working week, including on weekends, are performed in addition to standard working hours and compensated as additional hours, subject to prior approval by the LCC and applicable Peace Corps policy.
Regular travel to the assigned satellite site is required, typically three to five days per week. Public transport costs to and from the assigned satellite site are covered by Peace Corps in accordance with applicable policy.
Where the LCF’s permanent residence is outside the PST hub or satellite area, accommodation at or near the assigned training site may be arranged by Peace Corps, subject to approval and applicable Peace Corps policy.
